Allan H. Zerman

Allan H. ZermanAllan H. Zerman has been listed for more than ten years in Naifeh and Smith, The Best Lawyers in America, for Family Law. In 2011, the same directory named him the “St. Louis Area Lawyer of the Year for Family Law.” According to the publication, lawyers being honored as “Lawyers of the Year” were selected “…because, during the past two surveys, they received particularly high ratings from most of their peers… [t]he selected lawyers have earned a high level of respect among other leading lawyers in the same communities and the same specialties for their abilities, their professionalism, and their integrity.” He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers since 1987, and is a former president of its Missouri Chapter. He is ranked annually by St. Louis Magazine as one of St. Louis’ “Top Lawyers” for Family Law. Since 2005, he has been designated as one of St. Louis’ “Top 50 Super Lawyers” by Law and Politics Magazine — one of only two family law attorneys included in the “Top 50” list — the other being his partner Cary Mogerman.

In 2004, Mr. Zerman became one of only 100 divorce attorneys from across the United States to be inducted as a Diplomate of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers. Mr. Zerman holds the "AV" rating of the Martindale-Hubbell Legal Directory, and has lectured throughout the State of Missouri on family law topics for such sponsors of continuing legal education programming as The Missouri Bar, the University of Missouri, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is a 1960 graduate of the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri.

Mr. Zerman's notable role as personal attorney to all-star St. Louis Cardinal outfielder Curt Flood throughout his famous legal challenge to major league baseball’s reserve clause in the 1972 case of Flood v. Kuhn, 407 US 258 (1972) has been referenced in several recent books, including the most recent "A Well-Paid Slave," by sports author Brad Snyder. Mr. Zerman conceived the legal challenge, and appears in an installment of ESPN Classic’s Sports Century program, as well as the currently-airing HBO documentary film "The Curious Case of Curt Flood" (2011). Flood's suit is credited as resulting in baseball free agency.

Mr. Zerman has co-authored many articles for legal journals and continuing legal education programs over the years. Several of those articles appear elsewhere on this web site. He has also co-authored two chapters in the two-volume book entitled Missouri Family Law: "Characterization and Division of Property in Divorce" and "Conflicts of Law." His comments regarding developments in family law are regularly sought by the publication "Missouri Lawyers’ Weekly." He is married and the father of four children.
